In 1999, the state produced about 32.9 million barrels. North Dakota produced a record 79.7 million barrels in 2009, an increase of about 17 million barrels from 2008. Even three decades ago, the last time nearly 100 rigs were operating in North Dakota, the states highest annual production total was about 50 million barrels.

The North Dakota Petroleum Council says the number of rigs piercing North Dakotas oil patch has topped 100 for the first time in nearly three decades. Council President Ron Ness says 101 rigs were drilling in western North Dakotas oil patch on Wednesday.

That information is according to the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division Web site, which regularly updates the number of rigs drilling in the state. But North Dakota oil development experts say the number of rigs will continue to climb this year as development in the Bakken Formation is on the rebound.
